That's Success! Section 2: Skyscraper Hypnosis

SCYSCRAPER HYPNOSIS

Frank quickly folded up the newspaper which was so sadly deficient in consideration of others. But what did he see on the back page in bold print - "Good day! I have got my first million! Sam Brankwyn." "Florian, that man must be a real character if he communicates through an ad like that with his friends. He certainly has a sense of humour, and such a person must have a kind heart! Let's get moving and visit this Mr Sam Brankwyn". The new hope gave them new energy. Before Frank and Florian marched into the centre of the huge city of Chicago, they met a well-fed man whose clothes, however, looked torn and ragged. This fat tramp held out his hat under Frank's nose, begging. Oh, the irony of fate! Frank turned all his pockets inside out, and just stood there laughing while Florian accompanied his laughter with loud barking. The fat man turned away with a mischievous grin: "Good bye! Good luck, my little boy!" he said, and waddled off. "Florian, that tramp is a man of the world, to judge by his good manners; he must have fallen on hard times: his considerable girth shows that he is a gourmet!" But the sight of such corpulence had not done Florian any good; he growled, having a cramp in his stomach. Picture 139. Stars over Manhattan Now the delicious smell of roast meat wafted out of the grill room of a big hotel into their noses, doing them even less good. They didn't dare to look left or right, as they had to walk past the most tantalising display of food in the hotel window. At the corner of a big intersection, Frank saw a complacent-looking gentleman sitting on the comfortable seat of an elegant car, smoking a cigar with relish. "Mr Sam Brankwyn!" Frank cried inadvertantly, "Florian, that man looks as though it might be him!" Just then the policeman held up his arm, blocking Frank's view. There was nothing for it but to wait. Florian sat down and Frank looked at the tall houses that seemed to reach up into the sky. The skyscraper hypnosis affected his empty stomach. He felt as light as a dragonfly and took off effortlessly. His cat-burglar skills overstepped the bounds of all probability. He was already up beyond the clouds and from his vantage point could see the stars clearly which were invisible down on earth during the day. They came over to Frank, greeted him with friendliness, took him by the arms and drew him ever higher up into the cosmos. - "Where does Mr Sam Brankwyn of Chicago live?" Frank inquired of a very large star wearing a cummerbund that was taking special notice of him. "In Klepprit Street, on the right at the board on the barn cart!" - "That can't be right: he is a millionaire!" - Frank had only just contradicted the star when he found himself back behind the policeman, who was about to let the traffic move on. Frank turned round and said to his companion Florian: "Let's go to Klepprit Street and visit Mr Sam Brankwyn. Maybe he can help us; he is a rich man and he will have food and drink to spare anyway!"
